Joan Frances Currence, 84, of Barberton Ohio, formerly of Oakland, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 4, 2024 surrounded by her family. Born March 23rd, 1940 in Newark, New Jersey, Joan was the oldest of three daughters born to Mary Frances (Yutzy) Paige and Joseph Paige.
Joan married the love of her life, Michael L. Currence, after meeting during college in Fairmont, West Virginia. They married and relocated to Carey, Ohio where they started a family. Her husband’s teaching and coaching career moved the family many times around northeastern Ohio. Throughout these years Joan worked as a registered nurse in various hospitals and a school nurse, most notably at Central Catholic High School where she also coached tennis. Joan met some of her dearest friends in Sandusky, Westlake, Massillon, Canton, and Akron. She enjoyed her golf and tennis leagues, bridge parties, and boating with her friends and family when they lived on Portage Lakes.
Joan is preceded in death by sister, Jean Close and brother-in-law, Alex Close of McHenry, Maryland. She is survived by her husband Michael L. Currence; son Michael Todd Currence (Chiara) of Turin, Italy; daughter Rebecca Gravenstein of Akron; grandchildren Michelle Currence of Turin, Isabelle Currence of Turin, Viktor Gravenstein of Brunswick, Paige Gravenstein Pattishall (Mike) of Gainesville, Florida, Amy Gravenstein of Akron; her sister Deb Swiger (Tom) of Oakland, Maryland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at 12 noon at House of Eberhardt Funeral Home, 472 W Turkeyfoot Lk. Rd. (Rt. 619) Portage Lakes, New Franklin. Rev. Father David Verbsky, officiating. A private family interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
